Commission a Radiotherapy Memory Mask
Introducing Radiotherapy Memory Masks by David Buffrey: Turning Struggle into Art
Commissioning a Radiotherapy Memory Mask
During radiotherapy treatments for your brain, head, or neck, you wear a specially crafted mask to hold your head and neck in the precise position required for accurate and effective treatment. This mask, often referred to as a mould, head shell, or cast, is custom-made to perfectly fit the contours of your face, becoming a second skin formed from a hardening plastic mesh.
Now, after completing your treatment, you have the opportunity to keep your radiotherapy mask and transform it into a unique and meaningful piece of timeless artwork. These Radiotherapy Memory Masks aim to facilitate the healing process by expressing hope, spirituality, and strength, confronting the struggle faced during treatment, and symbolizing a profound story of heroic endeavor and bravery.
The relationship with the Memory Mask will be deeply personal, reflecting the unique experiences of each individual and their loved ones. The transformative process of creating these art pieces turns something often seen as gloomy into a powerful representation of resilience and empowerment.
This artwork can help express what words cannot.

Jonathan Peat’s Testimonial - "The radiotherapy mask was a by product of the treatment for the illness that would inevitably take her physical form away but not her spirit. The mask naturally posed as it was, shows defiance, strength, and resolve. Tracey and I had pondered for months trying to understand what we could do with the mask - bronze, ceramic, and even graffiti art. The progression of the illness put this to the back of our thoughts. Two months after Tracey passed, I revisited this and found the perfect medium and artist to capture the essence and soul of Tracey, certainly to my eyes anyway. In a sense, Tracey is now immortalized. And after 28 years together, she'll still long outlast me." - Jonathan Peat.
This project holds a profound significance as it commemorates the remarkable life of Tracey Jennifer Peat, born on 30/03/1967.
Within the last 15 years of Tracey's life, she faced serious health challenges. Despite the pain and fatigue, she embraced life with unwavering determination, always seeking to make the most of every moment. Tracey's love for travel, particularly to Brazil, was a recurring theme throughout her life. "Fortaleza," the Portuguese word for strength and the very name of this piece, serving as both inspiration and a fitting metaphor, resonating deeply with Tracey's resilience and her enduring journey.
Jonathan's heartfelt narrative and his reflections on Tracey's resilience profoundly influenced my creative process. Through my craft, I sought to preserve Tracey's enduring journey in a tangible form.
"Fortaleza" stands as a tribute to the indomitable strength that defined Tracey Jennifer Peat's life journey, which spanned from 30/03/1967 to 21/05/2023. It is a testament to her legacy, a lasting symbol of love and resilience.
